Burundi police say 77 officers killed during year of unrest – over 470 civilians have died

A Burundian rights group has said political violence has killed 1,098 people in the past year

A TOTAL of 77 Burundian police officers have been killed since violence erupted in the East African nation a year ago, spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.

Unrest that began in April 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a third term has also left 374 civilians dead, Nkurikiye told reporters Tuesday in the capital, Bujumbura. He said 59 police officers had also been arrested for unspecified behaviour, while 38 had been expelled from the force.

The United Nations has previously put the death toll in landlocked Burundi at more than 470. The Nairobi-based Daily Nation newspaper last week cited a Burundian rights group as saying political violence has killed 1,098 people in the past year.
